We place a coffee table inside a living room, and we notice that it is not in the proper scale. In this occasion, the measurement box on the bottom right corner, shows two numbers, because now each movement is completely separate from the other.ДЄs we did in 2-dimensional objects, here as well, if we use the Scale Tool and at the same time press and hold the Ctrl button, we will see that our modelвЂ™s size is shifting towards the center of the cube.ДЄ very simple example is shown in the two images below. Our modelвЂ™s axis is shifting every time, according to which scale point we have chosen. If we pick one of the scale points located in the middle of the edges of the cube and move it with our mouse, we will see our model being stretched along two directions (axis). Further down, we see the Scale tool working along the green axis. If we pick one of the points from the middle of a surface, of the yellow cube, then we will notice that we are scaling our object towards a single direction, and as a result, it is being stretched and itsвЂ™ proportions are changed. Also, we can see the scale size, on the measurement box, on the bottom right corner. The model is always getting smaller towards the opposite corner from the one we clicked. In other words, we are changing the scale of it along with all 3 axes, at the same time. The main difference is that now we have a movement along the blue axis as well.Д«y grabbing one of the corner points, and moving it with our mouse, we see that we can increase or decrease the size of the object proportionally. These points have the exact same function as the ones we saw before in 2D. In this occasion, things are a bit different, because as we can see, we now have a yellow cube surrounding our object with 26 scale points. Again, in order to begin we need to select the whole model that we want to scale, and then pick the Scale Tool from the toolbar. LetвЂ™s see now, what happens when we have a 3dimensional object. In any of these two cases, the measurements box always shows the number of the scale, even if they are not much needed at this point.ДЄnd finally, if we select one of the corner points and at the same time press and hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard, we will see that the size of the circle is changing, but this time, the fixed point of the movement is the center of the circle. The exact same thing happens with the scale points that move along the green axis. In image 4 we can see the movement of the shape along the red axis.

If we pick one of the scale points in the middle of the sidelines of the yellow frame and move it, we notice that the circleвЂ™s size is increasing only in one direction, at the same time it is being stretched, and itsвЂ™ shape is ruined. We need to point out as well, that the fixed point of these actions, is always the one on the opposite corner of the one we have chosen. The measurement box on the bottom right corner indicates the scale in which the new model is 1:70 (image 3). If we click on one of the corner points, and we drag it, we notice that the circleвЂ™s size is changing proportionally along the x and y-axis, which means that the size is increasing or decreasing without distorting the shape. The Scale tool works in a different way every time, depending on which of these points we choose. These points we call them Scale Points because, in order to make the tool function, we have to click on one of these points first. Once we do that, we notice that around the circle appears a yellow frame with 8 green points. Then we select it and then from the basic toolbar of SketchUp we pick the Scale Tool icon. We start by drawing a circle in 2 dimensions. In this tutorial, we will see how the В«Scale ToolВ» functions on 2D and 3D objects. I remind you that an object in SketchUp can even be a single line or a surface, or even a 3dimensional house inside a group.

If we could describe in a few words what this tool does in general, then we would say that it allows us to increase and decrease the scale of an object. Another basic tool in SketchUp is the В«Scale ToolВ».

Sketchup measurement box
